Amazon FBA-ready drinkware: a seller's prep checklist

About a third of our orders these days end up in Amazon FBA warehouses. The factories that figured out FBA prep early have a meaningful advantage — and a lot of factories still get it wrong. Here's the checklist we run for every FBA-bound shipment, distilled from over 80 active Amazon sellers we currently work with.

What "FBA-ready" actually means

An FBA-ready shipment is one that Amazon can receive, scan, and add to your inventory the same day it arrives, without any manual handling. To qualify, the shipment must pass on four dimensions:

1. Individual unit prep: Polybag, FNSKU label, suffocation warning.
2. Master carton compliance: Size, weight, scannable shipping label.
3. Pallet / loose-loaded carton consistency: Either all the same size, or properly palletized.
4. Documentation: Shipment plan ID matches the physical shipment.

Get any of these wrong and your shipment can be flagged, slow-routed, or in the worst case "abandoned" (you pay a removal fee to get your product back).

Individual unit prep

Polybag specs

Every drinkware unit going to FBA needs to be individually polybagged. The bag must be:

• Transparent (not opaque) so the FNSKU label is visible through it
• 1.5 mil thickness minimum
• Sealed (heat-sealed or self-sealing adhesive)
• Printed with the standard suffocation warning if the bag opening is 5 inches (13 cm) or wider

The suffocation warning is the most commonly missed detail. The exact text must read: "WARNING: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages, or playpens. This bag is not a toy."

Print size: minimum 1/4 inch (6mm) for bags under 14 inches, larger for bigger bags. Yes, Amazon will measure.

FNSKU labels

Each unit gets an FNSKU label applied directly to the polybag (not the bottle itself, since the bottle might be unboxed and resold). The label must:

• Be readable by scanner — print quality matters
• Cover any existing UPC or EAN barcode
• Be placed on a flat surface area (not over a fold or seam)
• Match the FNSKU in your Amazon shipment plan exactly

For multi-pack listings (e.g., a 2-pack of bottles), the FNSKU goes on the outer multi-pack package, not the individual bottles.

Master carton compliance

The master carton requirements have changed twice in the last three years. As of 2026:

• Maximum weight: 23 kg (50 lb) per carton. This is the biggest one we still see failed.
• Maximum dimension: any side ≤ 63 cm (25 inches), unless explicitly approved as oversize.
• Mixed-SKU cartons are allowed but must follow strict labeling rules (each unit's FNSKU still applies; carton needs a clear "Mixed" label).
• Single-SKU cartons should be uniform: same SKU, same quantity, same configuration throughout the shipment.

For a 500ml stainless thermos, you typically fit 24 units per master carton at around 14 kg — comfortably under the weight limit. For larger 1L bottles, 12 per carton is the sweet spot.

Carton labels

Each master carton needs an FBA shipping label (printed from your Seller Central shipment plan), and on outer-carton placement:

• One on the top of the carton
• One on the long side (visible when stacked)
• The label must NOT be folded over carton seams or edges

The three things that get FBA shipments rejected

In our experience helping sellers, these are the failure modes that keep coming back:

1. Suffocation warning missing or too small

Easy to fix at the factory level, expensive to fix after the shipment lands in FBA. We now check this on every order during pre-shipment QC.

2. Master cartons over 23 kg

Especially common with stainless thermoses, which are heavier than buyers expect. A 750ml double-wall thermos weighs ~500g empty. 50 units already exceeds the limit.

3. FNSKU labels not scannable

Usually because the print is smudged, the label is on a wrinkled section of polybag, or the FNSKU was wrong in the shipment plan. Always test-scan a sample at the factory before bulk labeling.

"Send us a single sample carton with all FBA labels applied. We'll scan-test before we apply labels to 5,000 units. The 48-hour delay saves a $3,000 rejection."

Direct-to-FBA vs 3PL routing

You have two main options for getting product from China to Amazon:

• Direct to FBA centers (recommended): Sea freight or air freight direct from China to an FBA receiving center. We handle customs clearance, last-mile trucking, and the FBA appointment. Fewer touches, faster, cheaper.
• Via a US 3PL first: Ship to a 3PL warehouse, who then forwards to FBA. Adds 7–10 days, adds $0.30–$0.60 per unit, but gives you a domestic safety stock buffer.

For most sellers shipping 1–5 SKUs at moderate volume, direct-to-FBA is the right call. For sellers managing 20+ SKUs with unpredictable demand, the 3PL buffer often pays for itself.

The pre-shipment sanity check

Before any FBA shipment leaves our factory, we run the following on a randomized 30-unit sample:

• Polybag thickness measured (≥1.5 mil)
• Suffocation warning legibility verified (handheld 30cm reading test)
• FNSKU label scanned with a test scanner
• One sample master carton fully assembled, weighed, labeled, and photographed
• Carton dimensions measured against your Seller Central shipment plan

This adds about 4 hours to the prep work for a 5,000-unit order. It's prevented six-figures of FBA rejections in the time we've been doing it.
